J motion’s Production Manager, Mat Hyman, shares a few personal favourites from the wonderful world of TV advertising…
On July 14th 2010, Old Spice launched the fastest growing on-line viral video campaign ever, garnering 6.7 million views after 24 hours, ballooning over 23 million views after 36 hours.
I first saw this ad on-line when it was launched in 2010 and it had me in stitches. I have re-watched it hundreds of times since and it still has the same impact. For me it works on two levels, one for the hilarious script and Isaiah Mustafa’s delivery.
On a second level it’s a real technical achievement as it’s all seemingly shot in one take that incorporates morphing locations and props. Love it!
Surfer is a critically acclaimed integrated advertising campaign launched in 1999 by Diageo to promote Guinness.
The plot centres around a group of surfers, waiting for the perfect wave. As it arrives, the crashing ‘white horses’ turn into actual horses. One by one, a surfer ‘crashes out’, leaving only one, who manages to conquer the wave. The others join him as they celebrate on the shore.
I remember first seeing this ad on TV and was blown away by the scale of the whole thing. The way the horses were integrated into the live action still holds up today. The cinematography is stunning and the choice to shoot in black and white gives it a gritty quality that works beautifully.
The music and voiceover finish it off to create an extremely well crafted and memorable ad.
