The demographic challenge facing schools is unprecedented in recent times.
Latest DfE modelling estimates there’ll be 400,000 fewer pupils across Primary and Secondary schools by 2030.
While many Primary schools are already facing falling numbers, Secondary school rolls are due to peak in 2027 before falling as the population bulge moves out of compulsory education.
But a falling birth rate is only part of the story. Many urban schools – especially in London – are under pressure as families relocate out of town to beat the cost-of-living crisis.
